Return Authorization
Customers must contact Mycology Simplified and receive return authorization before sending any product back. Please do not send returns without first contacting us and receiving return instructions.
Once an authorized return has been shipped, the customer must provide Mycology Simplified with the return tracking number so the shipment can be documented and monitored. Failure to provide return tracking information may delay or affect our ability to process the return.
Products sent without prior authorization may not be accepted or eligible for a refund. Mycology Simplified is not responsible for products returned without authorization, sent to an incorrect address, or lost or damaged during return transit.
General Return Policy – Quick Reference
The following is a quick overview of our return and refund policies. Please see the detailed sections below for complete requirements, product-specific policies, exclusions, and additional information.
- 14-Day Window: Most eligible return requests and product concerns must be reported within 14 days of delivery.
- Return Authorization Required: Please contact Mycology Simplified before sending any product back. Unauthorized returns may not be accepted or eligible for a refund.
- Return Tracking Required: Once an authorized return is shipped, the return tracking number must be provided to Mycology Simplified.
- Original Shipping: Original shipping charges are generally non-refundable for ordinary approved returns.
- Return Shipping: Customers are generally responsible for return shipping costs unless the return is due to an error by Mycology Simplified or otherwise agreed upon.
- Product Condition: Returned products must meet the applicable condition requirements. Used, opened, inoculated, altered, or improperly stored products may not qualify for return, refund, or replacement.
- Perishable Products: Agar, grain, substrate, and All-In-One Bags have additional product-specific requirements due to their sterile and perishable nature.
- Documentation: Photos, dates, packaging, shipping labels, or other documentation may be required to evaluate product or shipping-related claims.
- Shipping Damage or Loss: Damage, loss, delays, and other carrier-related issues may require a claim with the shipping carrier. Carrier claims are subject to the carrier's terms, coverage, and approval.
- Refunds: Approved refunds are generally issued to the original payment method after the return or claim has been reviewed and approved.
- Exceptions: We understand that every situation is different. Mycology Simplified may make exceptions to these policies at our discretion when appropriate. An exception made in one situation does not waive or modify these policies for future orders or other customers.
Please see the sections below for complete details and requirements applicable to your specific product or situation.
General Terms for Returns
- Notification Timeframes: Customers must notify us within the specified timeframe for each product type to qualify for a return, refund, replacement, or other resolution.
- Original Shipping Charges: Original shipping charges are non-refundable for ordinary approved returns. Approved returns will generally be refunded for the eligible product cost only. If a return is the result of an error by Mycology Simplified, we may, at our discretion, refund the original shipping charges as well. If we are unable to fulfill or ship an order and applicable law requires a full refund, shipping charges will be refunded as required.
- Return/Exchange Shipping Costs: Customers are responsible for return shipping costs unless otherwise agreed to by Mycology Simplified. If a return or exchange is due to an error by Mycology Simplified, we will work with the customer to determine the appropriate return shipping arrangements.
- Damaged or Lost in Transit: Orders that are lost or arrive damaged as a result of carrier handling must be reported promptly. We may require photographs of the product, shipping box, internal packaging, shipping label, and any visible damage. Customers should retain all damaged products and packaging until the matter has been resolved.
- Carrier Claims: Shipping-related loss or damage may be handled through the applicable carrier's insurance or claims process. Depending on the carrier and circumstances, either the sender or recipient may be able to initiate a claim. Mycology Simplified may assist with, initiate, or provide supporting documentation for a carrier claim when appropriate. Any reimbursement related to carrier loss or damage, including shipping charges, is subject to the carrier's applicable coverage, claim requirements, investigation, and approved reimbursement amount.
- Processing Fees: Refunds may be reduced by non-refundable payment processing or transaction fees actually incurred by Mycology Simplified, where permitted by applicable law and disclosed as part of the refund process.
- Restocking Fees: Eligible perishable items such as agar may be subject to a restocking fee of up to 20% when returned for reasons unrelated to damage, defect, or an error by Mycology Simplified.
Combined Orders & Shipping Overpayments
When multiple orders are placed within a short period of time, we may contact the customer to confirm whether they would like the orders combined into a single shipment.
If approved and the orders have not yet been processed, any excess shipping charges will typically be issued as store credit rather than a cash refund. This helps offset non-refundable transaction and payment processing costs associated with the original orders.
Once an order has been processed, packed, labeled, or transferred to the carrier, we may be unable to combine shipments or adjust shipping charges.
Perishable Products: Agar, Grains, and Substrates
Agar, grains, substrates, and All-In-One Bags are perishable products with limited shelf lives. To ensure fairness and allow us to properly evaluate product concerns, customers must notify us within the applicable timeframes below and provide any requested documentation.
Agar Returns
Sealed Packaging
Agar must remain sealed in its original shrink-wrap packaging to qualify for a standard return. The transparent packaging allows the plates to be visually inspected prior to opening or use.
Return Window
Return requests must be submitted within 14 days of delivery.
Broken or Damaged Plates
Customers must provide clear, dated photographs of broken or damaged plates while they are still in their original packaging. We may also request photographs of the shipping box, internal packaging, and shipping label.
If the damage appears to have occurred during transit, the matter may be handled through the applicable carrier's claims process. We may request that the damaged items and packaging be retained or returned for inspection.
Non-Damaged Returns
If agar is returned for reasons other than damage, defect, or an error by Mycology Simplified, the customer is responsible for return shipping unless otherwise agreed upon. Original shipping charges are non-refundable.
Shipping Liability and Carrier-Related Damage
Once an order has been transferred to the shipping carrier, transit time, routing, handling, and environmental conditions are outside the direct control of Mycology Simplified.
Shipments may be exposed to conditions including extreme heat or cold, pressure changes, rough handling, delays, or extended transit times. Damage caused by these transit conditions may be considered carrier-related rather than a production or quality-control defect.
If your order arrives damaged, please contact us promptly so we can review the issue and assist with documentation or the appropriate carrier claim process.
Carrier claims and reimbursements are subject to the carrier's individual terms, coverage limits, documentation requirements, and final determination. Mycology Simplified cannot guarantee approval or payment of a carrier claim.
Agar – Freezing or Temperature Exposure
Agar is a temperature-sensitive product. Freezing or overheating caused by weather, carrier handling, delivery conditions, or transit delays is outside the direct control of Mycology Simplified.
We do not guarantee or automatically replace agar damaged during shipping as a result of freezing, overheating, or other temperature exposure. Carrier coverage for temperature-related damage to perishable products may also be limited or excluded.
To help reduce the risk of cold-weather damage, we offer an optional cold-weather shipping upgrade for under $7, which includes:
- A 96-hour heat pack
- A larger box to allow proper airflow
- Insulation to help maintain a more stable internal temperature during transit
This option is strongly recommended whenever temperatures along the shipping route may approach freezing.
Grain Bag Returns
Reporting Window
Customers must contact us within 14 days of delivery regarding any concern with a grain bag. Claims submitted after the 14-day reporting period may not be eligible for refund or replacement.
Quality Control & Rest Period
All grain bags are sterilized and allowed to rest for approximately 5–7 days prior to release. During this period, bags are monitored for visible signs of contamination or sterilization failure.
By the time a grain bag is delivered, it is often approximately 10–14+ days post-sterilization. Issues caused by sterilization failure will commonly become visible during the production, rest, shipping, or early delivery period.
Contamination or other issues appearing significantly later, particularly after inoculation or handling, may be related to genetics, inoculation technique, environmental exposure, storage conditions, handling, or other factors outside the control of Mycology Simplified.
Documentation Requirements
- Clear images of the sealed bag
- An image of the unused injection port with a handwritten date, if applicable
- Images of the reported issue prior to shaking, mixing, inoculation, or other alteration when possible
- Photos of the shipping box and packaging if shipping damage is suspected
Failure to provide requested documentation may limit our ability to evaluate the claim and may result in denial of a refund or replacement.
After Inoculation
Once a grain bag has been inoculated, results may depend on factors including:
- The sterility and quality of the genetics used
- The user's sterile technique
- Environmental conditions
- Storage and handling
Because these factors are outside our control, we cannot guarantee results after inoculation.
If a Multi-Spore Syringe (MSS) is used without first being tested on agar, we reserve the right to deny a refund or replacement related to contamination. Multi-Spore Syringes may contain contamination or biological variability that cannot be evaluated by Mycology Simplified.
Opened or Altered Bags
Bags that have been cut open or otherwise physically altered are not eligible for a standard return. Bags that have been inoculated, shaken, mixed, or otherwise used may also be ineligible for return or replacement depending on the nature of the claim.
Storage & Handling
- Improper storage conditions
- Exposure to extreme temperatures after delivery
- Delayed use beyond a reasonable timeframe
- Improper sterile technique
- Environmental contamination
- Contaminated or unverified genetics
Shipping Damage, Loss & Carrier Coverage
Eligible shipments may include carrier insurance or other carrier-provided coverage subject to the carrier's applicable terms and limitations.
If shipping damage, loss, or a delivery issue occurs, please contact us promptly. Depending on the carrier and circumstances, either the sender or recipient may be able to initiate the claim. Mycology Simplified will provide reasonable supporting documentation and may assist with or initiate a claim when appropriate.
Do not discard damaged products, shipping boxes, or packaging while a carrier claim is under review.
All refund or replacement determinations related to product quality are made after review of the available documentation.
All-In-One Bag Returns
All-In-One Bags contain both sterilized grain and substrate and are intended to remain fully sealed until use.
Reporting Window
Customers must contact us within 14 days of delivery regarding any concern with an All-In-One Bag. Claims submitted after the 14-day reporting period may not be eligible for refund or replacement.
Quality Control & Rest Period
All All-In-One Bags are sterilized and allowed to rest for approximately 5–7 days prior to release so they can be monitored for sterility and consistency.
By the time an All-In-One Bag is delivered, it is often approximately 10–14+ days post-sterilization. Issues resulting from sterilization failure will commonly become visible during the production, rest, shipping, or early delivery period.
Contamination appearing after inoculation, mixing, extended handling, or prolonged storage may be related to external genetics, environmental exposure, mixing timing, sterile technique, or storage conditions.
Documentation Requirements
- Clear images of the unopened and fully sealed bag
- An image of the unused injection port with a handwritten date, if applicable
- Images of the reported issue prior to inoculation or mixing when possible
- Photos of the shipping box and packaging if shipping damage is suspected
Failure to provide requested documentation may limit our ability to evaluate the claim and may result in denial of a refund or replacement.
After Inoculation or Mixing
- The sterility and quality of the genetics used
- Proper timing of mixing
- Environmental conditions
- The user's sterile technique
- Storage and handling
Because these factors are outside our control, we cannot guarantee results after inoculation or mixing.
If a Multi-Spore Syringe (MSS) is used without prior agar testing, we reserve the right to deny a refund or replacement related to contamination.
Opened, Mixed, or Altered Bags
Due to the sterile and perishable nature of All-In-One Bags, bags that have been cut open or otherwise physically altered are not eligible for a standard return.
Bags that have been inoculated, shaken, mixed, or otherwise used may also be ineligible for refund or replacement depending on the nature and timing of the reported issue.
Storage & Handling
Customers are responsible for proper storage and handling after delivery. We are not responsible for contamination or failure resulting from improper storage, temperature exposure after delivery, delayed use, contaminated genetics, or improper handling.
Do not discard damaged products, shipping boxes, or packaging while a carrier claim is being reviewed.
All refund or replacement determinations related to product quality are made after review of the available documentation.
Substrate Returns
- Customers must report and document any suspected product defect prior to use and while the substrate remains in its original packaging whenever possible.
- Used substrate is not eligible for a standard return or refund.
- Clear photographs of any suspected defect or damage may be required before a refund or replacement is approved.
- If damage appears to have occurred during shipping, the issue may be handled through the applicable carrier claims process.
- We may request the return of a defective or damaged substrate bag and may provide a prepaid return label when appropriate.
Clothing and Soft Goods
Clothing and other soft goods must be returned in the same condition in which they were received: unworn, unused, with tags attached when applicable, and in the original packaging.
Return requests must be made within 14 days of delivery. Original shipping charges are non-refundable unless the return is due to an error by Mycology Simplified or we agree otherwise.
